He might be a good PM only as a distant possibility just like Rajiv Gandhi who was nowhere in politics when he became PM by the compulsion of the situation. But if what we understand about his activities from the media is an indication, he is nowhere near it in my opinion. First thing, he should be able to clean up his party and set it in order by free and fair party elections and bringing up new generation of young leaders who has the will and dynamism and vision to lead India forward in the 21st century. The past 4 years were the ideal time for this type of learning from the past and introspection and drawing up a serious action plan for the future. He or anybody in Congress has done anything in this direction? Instead, what he is doing is to catch an occasional attention of the media by some weak, amateur jab at Modi.
Unfortunately, there is no clear way to test the real worth of a leader other than the street rhetoric and false promises just at the time of an election of some sort. Actually, regarding this, I think we have to adapt the western system of a series of leader to leader debates, shadow cabinet and thus allow the people to have an idea about the vision and action plan of any party and decide accordingly their choice of leadership and monitor continuously the performance of their choice. The leadership show should shift from the streets to the debating table and to the true execution of the plans. Then only any country can blossom into a real vibrant, no nonsense democracy.
