'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan'

'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' was former PM Lal Bahadur Saasthri's slogan. Both protects us-one from the enemy, the other from hunger. But, of late, blinded by the glittering development programmes, we have learned to ignore our poor farmer. While the jawan meets heroic death from enemy fire our farmers kill themselves in higher numbers in horrible circumstances brought about by our lopsided policies. Let this be an occasion to remember the unknown farmer alongside the jawan and to pledge to do everything possible to alleviate the farmers' plight as well.
